What to Expect During Spravato® Treatment

If you’re considering Spravato® (esketamine) treatment, it’s natural to wonder what the experience will actually be like.

Many patients ask questions such as:

  • How long does a Spravato appointment take?
  • What happens during treatment?
  • Will I be monitored?
  • How will I feel afterward?

Understanding the process ahead of time can make your first appointment much more comfortable.

At Therapeutic Infusions, Spravato is delivered in a physician-led medical clinic with continuous monitoring, ensuring patients receive treatment in a safe and supportive environment.

If you’re still learning about the therapy itself, you can read more about Spravato treatment in Delaware.

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Evaluation

Before beginning treatment, patients complete a consultation with a medical provider.

During this visit, the clinical team reviews:

  • depression history
  • medications previously tried
  • overall medical history
  • current symptoms and treatment goals

This evaluation helps determine whether Spravato is appropriate for your condition.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, our guide explaining Spravato eligibility and treatment-resistant depression provides additional details.

Step 2: Preparing for Your Treatment Appointment

On the day of treatment, patients arrive at the clinic and check in with the clinical team.

Preparation typically includes:

  • measuring blood pressure and vital signs
  • reviewing medications and recent health changes
  • confirming transportation home after treatment

Because Spravato can temporarily affect awareness and perception, patients cannot drive themselves home after treatment.

Step 3: Spravato Administration

Spravato is administered as a nasal spray under clinical supervision.

Patients self-administer the medication while medical staff observe and guide the process.

The medication is given in several doses spaced a few minutes apart to ensure proper absorption.

Once the medication is administered, patients relax in a comfortable medical recliner while the treatment begins to take effect.

Step 4: Monitoring During Treatment

Spravato can temporarily increase blood pressure and cause changes in perception. Because of this, patients must remain under observation after receiving the medication.

During the monitoring period, the clinical team tracks:

  • blood pressure
  • heart rate
  • oxygen levels
  • overall comfort and response to treatment

Patients typically remain in the clinic for at least two hours, as required by the Spravato REMS safety program.

You can learn more about the safety protocols used at our Spravato clinic with medical monitoring.

What Does Spravato Feel Like?

Each patient’s experience is slightly different, but many people report sensations such as:

  • deep relaxation
  • feeling “light” or “floaty”
  • changes in perception or awareness
  • emotional processing or reflection

These effects usually begin within 10–15 minutes of administration and gradually fade as the medication wears off.

Most patients remain comfortable and relaxed during the session.

Step 5: Recovery and Discharge

After the monitoring period, patients are discharged once their vital signs have returned to a safe range.

Because Spravato can temporarily impair coordination or awareness:

  • patients must arrange transportation home
  • driving is not permitted until the next day
  • most patients rest for the remainder of the day

Many people feel tired afterward, though others report feeling mentally clearer or emotionally lighter.

Spravato Treatment Schedule

Spravato treatment follows a structured schedule.

The typical protocol includes:

Weeks 1–4

Two treatments per week.

Weeks 5–8

One treatment per week.

Maintenance phase

Some patients continue treatment every one to two weeks depending on their response.

We will determine the appropriate schedule based on your symptoms and progress.

Insurance and Cost Questions

Many patients want to know whether Spravato treatment is covered by insurance.

Coverage often depends on:

  • treatment-resistant depression diagnosis
  • prior medication history
  • insurance authorization approval

Our clinic assists patients in navigating this process.
